Meet the international speakers of the 2026 edition!

Prof. Dr. Michel Adamina

Prof. Dr. Chief of Colorectal Surgery, Cantonal Hospital of Winterthur; Professor of Surgery, University of Basel, Switzerland

He is a member of the program committee of both the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery and of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP)

Prof. Adamina is the author of more than 135 peer-reviewed scientific papers with a personal impact factor of 1’140, an h-index of 42 and more than 12’080 citations, as well as numerous didactic videos, book chapters and book covering the full breadth and depth of colorectal and pelvic surgery.

He serves as an Editorial Board member of the peer-reviewed journal Cancers.

Most recently, Prof. Adamina was appointed Department Head of General Surgery at the Cantonal Hospital of Fribourg and Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

He also founded another major global Colorectal congress, Colorectal THRIVE, which is held yearly in spring in Fribourg and pledges to offer one of the best postgraduate education experience in surgery.

Prof. Dr. Alaa El-Hussuna

Dr. El-Hussuna holds a distinguished portfolio of academic qualifications spanning medicine, surgery, and information technology.

He earned his Ph.D. in Surgery from Aalborg University and previously completed a Master of Science in Information Technology (M.Sc.) at the IT University of Copenhagen.

His career is marked by significant contributions to both the medical and academic communities.

He leads the OpenSourceResearch collaboration (OSRC.network), an international research organization.

He served as Chairperson of the Surgical Steering Committee of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (S-ECCO).

Additionally, he is a founding member of the Cohort Studies Committee of the European Society of Colo-Proctology (ESCP), which he has chaired 2021-2025.

Dr. El-Hussuna has published 170 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals, including several international guidelines for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

His editorial roles include serving on the boards of prestigious journals such as the British Journal of Surgery and PLOS ONE.

Prof. Dr. Emre Balık

Koç University School of Medicine, Istanbul, Türkiye
Prof. Dr. Emre Balık is a colorectal surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Koç University School

of Medicine in Istanbul, Türkiye. He graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine and pursued research training in colorectal surgery and minimally invasive techniques at Columbia University, New York.

Prof. Balık is currently the active president of the Turkish Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery, board member of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) and member of ESCP, ASCRS, SSAT, and EAES.

His clinical and academic work focuses on colorectal cancer, minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgery, pelvic floor disorders, and advanced gastrointestinal surgical oncology.

Prof. Balık has authored or co-authored more than 180 peer-reviewed publications indexed in major databases. His research has received over 4,300 citations with an H-index of 30 on Google Scholar.

Prof. Dr. Eloy Espín Basany

Prof Dr. Eloy Espín Basany is a colorectal surgeon and Professor of Surgery and

Chief of Surgery Department at the Hospital Universitari Vall d’ Hebrón Barcelona, Spain.

He graduated from ITESM-Monterrey (México) and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas and completed the general and digestive surgery degree residency at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Hospital General Vall d’Hebron. Prof Basany is expert in laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery including complex cancer, IBD or pelvic floor diseases.

He occupied multiple positions within the Spanish and European Medical Societies.

Prof. Basany authored of more than 270 national presentations and 100 international presentations, 19 book chapters and 52 national and 123 international publications and steered multiple training and educational committees.

Prof. Dr. Frederic Ris

Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva (Switzerland)
Vice-director of the Geneva University

Hospitals Cancer Center (Nov. 2022), responsible for the HIPEC program and one of the founders of the Swiss peritoneal cancer group.

PD, senior lecturer for research on fluorescence Imaging.

Awarded with prizes including the Swiss Surgery Society Award and the Marc-Claude Marti Award.

Expert in minimally invasive colorectal surgery (IBD and cancer), pelvic floor disorders and oncologic surgery.

His main areas of interest are:
colorectal and oncological surgery (notably accelerated rehabilitation after surgery);
pelvic floor and proctology (with innovative approaches to repair the puborectal muscle);
new technologies (with a specific interest in augmented reality and indocyanine green for visualization of bowel vascularization and lymph nodes).

Prof. Dr. Erman Aytaç

Professor of Surgery, Chair of the Department of General Surgery at Istanbul Arel University School of Medicine.

Coordinator of “the National Gastric Cancer Consensus Program” conducted by the National Gastric Cancer Association.

Prof. Aytaç’s clinical expertise focuses on:
gastrointestinal cancers,
inflammatory bowel disease and advanced minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques.

Prof. Dr. Mark Ellebæk

Prof. Dr. Mark Ellebæk is a Professor of Oncology at the Montpellier Medical University and Head of the Department of Oncologic Surgery at the Montpellier Cancer Institute.

He has extensive expertise in
surgical oncology, with a special focus on
gastrointestinal tumors, particularly rectal
cancer.
He has published over 260 scientific
papers and book chapters and has
presented at more than 500 international
meetings. He is a member of leading
professional societies, including the
European Society of Coloproctology, the
European Society of Surgical Oncology, and
the European Society for Surgical Research,
and was awarded the title of Chevalier de
la Légion d’Honneur in 2016.
Professor Ellebæk has played a key role in
advancing minimally invasive techniques
for gastrointestinal tumors and pelvic
recurrence, from laparoscopy to robotic
surgery. His team has performed over
1,500 robotic procedures, including more
than 900 for rectal cancer, and contributed
to early work on transanal total mesorectal
excision (TaTME).
He is a founding member of the GRECCAR
research group and has led several clinical
trials (GRECCAR 1, 4, and 14).
In addition to his clinical and research
work, he is actively engaged in teaching
and mentorship and holds leadership roles
in European and national surgical
organizations, including ERNICA and the
Danish Surgical Society, and has served as
ESCP National Representative for Denmark.

Prof. Dr. Phillipe Rouanet

Professor of Oncology at the Montpellier medical university, Head of the Department of Oncologic Surgery at The Montpellier cancer Institute.

Prof. Rouanet has a large activity in the
field of Surgical Oncology particularly GI
tumors and especially rectal carcinoma.
260 scientific papers and chapters have
been published and presented at more
than 500 meetings or seminars.
He is member of the European society of
colo proctology, European Society of
Surgical Oncology, European Society for
Surgical Research and International
society of university colon and rectal
surgeons, promoted Chevalier de la Légion
d’honneur in 2016.
He developed for a long time minimally
invasive surgery for GI tumors and pelvic
recurrence, first by laparoscopy then by
robotic surgery. He published one of the
first series of Trans anal TME performed
by a proctoscope. His surgical team has
operated more than 1500 patients by
ROBOT of whom 900 rectal carcinoma.
Pr Rouanet is one of the founders of the
French group of research for rectal
carcinoma (GRECCAR) and conducted a lot
of surgical trial (GRECCAR1, GRECCAR4 and
GRECCAR14).
He is the principal investigator of the
Prospective European trial RESET,
endorsed by the ESCP, which has recruited
1300 patients in 10 European countries,
early results recently published in Annals
of Surg

Prof. Dr. Fadel Shabeeb

Professor Fadel Shabeeb, is a Clinical Professor and Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon.

Prior to joining Mediclinic Middle East, Professor Shabeeb worked as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at North Cumbria Integrated Healthcare NHS England, United Kingdom, and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. He is specialized in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, with a focus on robotic and laparoscopic colorectal resections for cancers and other bowel pathology, anorectal and pelvic floor disorders, and bowel cancer screening. He has been involved in mentoring and teaching medical students and surgical residents. He has held many academic positions in different world-class universities such as Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, USA; Monash University, Malaysia; and Khalifa University, UAE. He participated in multiple studies to achieve the development of high-quality education and the formation of a strong foundation for the development of effective patient care. Professor Shabeeb is a Fellow of the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons (FASCRS), Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and currently serves as Treasurer and Secretary of the American College of Surgeons, UAE Chapter, as well as a committee member on Robotic Surgery for the Society of American Gastrointestinal & Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He is an internationally certified surgical coach by the Academy for Surgical Coaching, American College of Surgeons. Professor Shabeeb believes in patient-centered, patient-first care, promoting patients’ understanding of their disease process, the role of surgery, and setting their expectations. He values teamwork (including the patients) and multidisciplinary specialty care.

Prof. Dr. Pasquale Talento

President of SIUCP-ETS, Unitary Italian Society of Coloproctology – Third Sector Institution.

Colorectal Surgeon with a highly specialized role in the management and organization of the Pelvic Floor Center Unit in Reggio Emilia, Pelvic Floor Center – Colorectal Unit, Surgical Department, AUSL Reggio Emilia IRCCS, Italy. Professor Dr. Talento graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University “Federico II” of Naples in 1991 and later specialized in Digestive System Surgery and Digestive Endoscopy at the same university. He has always focused on coloproctology and pelvic floor disorders and has trained at numerous international centers to deepen his expertise in innovative and minimally invasive colorectal surgical techniques. He is currently a medical director with a high-specialization role in Proctological Surgery and Pelvic Floor Surgery at Montecchio Emilia Hospital, in the Surgery Department at Franchini Hospital in Montecchio, affiliated with the Complex Unit of General and Emergency Surgery at Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio Emilia. He previously served as national coordinator of Colonproctology Units across Italy and as a national council member of SIUCP.

Prof. Dr. Dorin Popa

Professor Dorin Popa is an Examination Board Secretary for the EBS-MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery).

He has been a member of the Executive Board of the Swedish Society for Innovation in Surgery (SIKT) since 2017. He is also a member of the Education and Training Committee of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) since 2015 and served as Chair of the same committee from 2019 to 2023. Additionally, he is a member of the Education and Training Committee of United European Gastroenterology (UEG). He has served as Chair of the Education and Training Committee of the Swedish Society of Laparoscopic Surgery (SIKT) since 2022 and is Treasurer of the EBS-MIS UEMS since 2023. He has published in the fields of colorectal surgery, surgical education, and minimally invasive approaches in acute settings. He is actively engaged in surgical education activities, promoting minimally invasive surgery (MIS) courses in Sweden and across Europe.
